The Brilliant Cut - The Name Says it All

For years, women (and even some men) have swooned over the breathtaking beauty of a Brilliant Cut diamond. Undoubtedly the most popular cut for a diamond, this particular style sits on many women's fingers the world over. But what exactly sets the Brilliant Cut diamond apart from the rest?

Origins of the Brilliant Cut
The first person to design and master this admired cut was Marcel Tolkowsy in the early 1900's. Tolkowsy came from a family of diamond cutters, but was also an engineer by trade. He is renowned the world over as the "father" of today's round Brilliant Cut. In 1919 he also developed the "American Standard" which was the benchmark for North American diamond cutters. He developed the cut based on precise mathematical calculations that accounted both brilliance and "fire" ("fire" being the colours - often reds, yellows and oranges that reflect throughout the diamond).

Facets in Detail
Today's Brilliant Cut diamond has only changed slightly since it was first developed by its creator. Comprising of 58 facets usually cut in two pyramids placed base to base, the current Brilliant Cut diamond proportions outline 33 facets on the crown (the top half pyramid which is looked at the most when set) and 25 facets on the pavilion (the lower half pyramid which is usually hidden when set in a band).
Choosing a Setting to Show off the Brilliant Cut Diamond

Probably one of the reasons why this diamond cut is so popular is because it is one of the more flexible designs to set. One of the most desired settings on the market is known as the Tiffany setting. Its popularity not only stems from the brand of the same name, but also the fact that it is so simple in its design, allowing the diamond to truly be the centre piece of the ring. Another style that is also perfect to show off a Brilliant Cut diamond is a Bezel setting. The Bezel essentially encases the ring and makes the stone appear much larger than it actually is.

So now you know all there is about the world's most popular diamond cut. Its origins, facets, and favoured settings are all important, but at the end of the day, dropping to one knee and asking that question to your special someone will truly make the day special. The beauty of any engagement ring is that the diamond will be there forever to simply remind you and your partner of the day you proposed and what that means to the both of you. Whichever way you choose to set your Brilliant Cut diamond, this design is the most favoured diamond in the world for a reason - it's stunning colours and true beauty.
