How to keep your computer safe on the Internet

Internet viruses and security breaches are a common occurrence if you don't take care of your computer properly. There are constantly new viruses being made that can do significant damage to your machine and your personal information. Here are some important things you should implement to protect your computer from internet attacks.

The most basic and most important thing that will reduce your exposure to viruses and security breaches is a rather obvious one: Don't open/download any files that you think may be infected. If you are unsure of the source of these files, simply don't download them. When you visit some sites, pop ups may come up asking to install software, if you have never heard of it and you weren't intending to find the program whilst visiting the website, there's a good chance that it's some sort of attempt to breach your security. Simple things like avoiding opening emails and downloading items from email addresses you are not familiar with will most definitely reduce your risk to security breaches.

Any well protected computer out there will have a firewall. Firewalls are your first real line of defense from intrusions, sitting between your computer and the internet, making sure no harmful material gets onto your computer. These are by far one of the most necessary forms of protection you can obtain, with many firewalls being freely available on the Internet. Should you want a more comprehensive firewall, you can purchase one from one of the many reputable antivirus/firewall developers.

The second line of defense is your computers anti virus. These programs scan your computer for files that may be infected with viruses, and subsequently safely remove them. Some anti Virus programs have real time capabilities, constantly scanning your machine for any suspicious files that you may encounter. There are many free anti virus programs out there, but if you want more advanced functions you will normally have to pay for them. Phone and broadband packages normally provide you with an anti virus and firewall package if you opt to get all your services from them. This can be a great way of protecting your computer as well as saving you money. You must remember though that your anti virus will only work well if you keep the virus definitions regularly updated, so the software can keep up with the ever growing list of viruses out there.

The final piece of advice would be to always make sure that all your programs on your computer are up to date. The majority of security breaches occur when programs have not been updated/patched. Program developers are constantly updating their products to make sure their software is not vulnerable to attack. Old versions of software will be much more vulnerable to security breaches. With a bit of weekly upkeep on your computer, you can make sure your information and computer are safe from any type of intrusion.
