Aryaka moves WAN optimization from branch into cloud

Aryaka Networks provides optimization tools for wide-area networks (WANs), helping reduce bandwidth usage and mitigate latency issues that plague some large companies that need to transmit large amounts of data around the world by optimizing the files that are transferred. Aryaka Networks uses a number of methods. One of them, called deduplication, transmits only changes in a file rather than sending the complete file a second or third time.
Aryaka provides a cloud-based solution that requires no client-side setup and maintenance, while other providers of WAN optimization offer appliances that require a "do-it-yourself" setup to handle the optimization. A portion of the data transmitted by a company passes through a number of quick-fire optimization processes at Aryaka Networks' global Points of Presence in the U.S., Europe and Asia and is then sent to its destination.
Aryaka expects its cloud-based model to put other WAN optimization providers that offer their services in the form of a client-side "box", out of business. The market for providing WAN optimization isn't very saturated, with only about 300,000 of a potential 8 million businesses getting on board. The research data predicts that people are getting fed up with the cost, complexity and management aspect of the WAN optimization solutions.
Aryaka Networks has launched a WAN optimization service in the cloud that was designed from the ground up for the cloud. Instead of repurposing application acceleration code originally designed to run on an appliance in a branch office, Aryaka Network CEO Ajit Gupta said that by starting over, the company is able to deliver a WAN optimization service in the cloud that improves the performance of latency-sensitive applications running across a WAN by 150 percent.
As the number of latency-sensitive applications in the enterprise has increased, bandwidth has become a bigger issue. But most IT organizations have limited their investments in WAN optimization appliances to deal with this issue because of the capital costs. Gupta says a cloud computing service essentially democratizes WAN optimization software by providing this capability as a service that only needs to be invoked when needed. In contrast, existing WAN optimization solutions are too complex to manage and expensive to deploy, he said. Pricing for the Aryaka Networks service will be determined by the size of the link to the service and where that link originates.

While the promise of lower IT costs, greater scalability and more flexible computing are hard to ignore, amid all the noise many CTOs and IT managers are finding it increasingly difficult to understand the signal of how best to take advantage of Cloud Computing - or even how to get started. Being SaaS, Aryaka's solution, a fundamental architectural and business model shift that supposedly couldn't be done, can be deployed in minutes with no capital expense. The company claims users can see a 158x performance improvement and a 500%+ return on investment. TRAC Research considers it disruptive, "taking what has traditionally been a hardware play and turning it into a service, and, on top of that, they're providing the connectivity - all in a single solution."
Aryaka's announcement could be the boost that the WAN optimization industry has needed, and also the driver for other companies in this space to consider alternative ways to better serve this market. The company's approach has a strong potential to change how organizations think about WAN optimization services, how they are deploying them and what the addressable market for these services is.
